Semrush Review 2026: We Tested It for 30 Days — Here's Our Honest Verdict

Semrush is the biggest name in SEO software, which means it also attracts the most hype. We ran it on real projects for a full month — audits, keyword research, rank tracking, link analysis, competitor teardowns — to find out what it actually does well, where it frustrates, and whether it's worth the premium price.

Our score and verdict come from hands-on testing and are not influenced by the commission — we say the same things about tools we don't earn from (see our best SEO tools ranking).

8.7 / 10 Quick verdict

★★★★☆

Semrush is the most complete SEO platform we've tested. Its keyword research and competitor-gap analysis are genuinely best-in-class, and the all-in-one workflow (SEO + content + PPC research) replaces multiple subscriptions. It's expensive, the learning curve is real, and plan limits will annoy heavy users — but for teams doing SEO as a growth channel, nothing else covers this much ground this well.

What is Semrush, and who is it for?

How this review was conducted

We tested Semrush on paid plans for 30 days across three real projects: a content site (keyword research and gap analysis), an agency client account (site audits and rank tracking), and an e-commerce store (competitor and PPC research). We ran full site audits, tracked several hundred keywords daily, exported backlink profiles, and built content briefs from gap reports — the same work a paying subscriber does. Semrush did not sponsor this review, did not see it before publication, and had no input on the score. Where we describe limits or frustrations below, they're things we hit ourselves during that month.

Semrush is an all-in-one digital marketing platform anchored in SEO. At its core it does five things: keyword research (find what people search and how hard it is to rank), site audits (crawl your site for technical issues), rank tracking (monitor your positions daily), backlink analysis (see who links to you and competitors), and competitor intelligence (reverse-engineer rivals' keywords, traffic, and ad strategies). Around that core it layers content-optimization tools, PPC research, social media tooling, and — newer — AI search-visibility tracking that monitors how your brand shows up in AI-generated answers.

Who it's for: in-house marketing teams, agencies managing multiple clients, content-led businesses, and serious affiliate or niche-site builders. Who it's not for: anyone who only needs one narrow job done (just rank tracking, just a backlink check) — cheaper specialists handle those better, and Semrush's breadth becomes expensive overhead.

One recent development worth knowing: Semrush was acquired by Adobe (announced on semrush.com). For now the product and plans continue as before, but it's worth watching how the roadmap evolves under new ownership.

Plans & pricing

Pricing checked: October 16, 2026. We re-check monthly — vendors change prices without notice.

Semrush currently sells four paid tiers plus a limited free tier. From entry to flagship, the plan names are SEO, Starter, Pro+, and Advanced (the older Pro/Guru/Business names have been retired for new customers). Higher tiers mainly unlock more projects, more keywords to track, more reports per day, historical data depth, and — on Pro+ and up — the content marketing toolkit.

We don't print prices here on purpose: Semrush revised its plan lineup and pricing recently, and stale numbers help nobody. The practical differences that matter: entry tiers cap the number of projects and tracked keywords tightly, so check the limits row — not just the headline features — against how many sites and keywords you actually manage.
Check Semrush's current pricing →

Our take after testing the limits: most solo users and small teams fit the first two tiers; agencies and heavy users should price out Pro+ or Advanced by counting tracked keywords first, because overage-style upsells are where the real cost hides. A free trial is available on paid plans, which is the right way to verify the limits against your actual workload before committing.

Hands-on: the features we actually used

Marketing pages list 50+ tools. In 30 days of real project work, these are the ones that earned their keep — and the honest caveats on each.

Keyword Magic Tool

Type in a seed keyword and get thousands of grouped suggestions with intent labels, difficulty scores, and trend data. The grouping (by topic cluster rather than one endless list) is what makes it practical: we turned a single seed into a three-month content calendar in an afternoon. Intent classification — informational vs. commercial vs. transactional — was accurate enough to shape briefs directly. Caveat: difficulty scores are estimates, not physics. Treat them as a sorting heuristic and always sanity-check the actual SERP for your money keywords.

Site Audit

Point it at a domain and it crawls like a search engine, then scores site health and prioritizes issues by severity. On our mid-size test site it surfaced 130+ issues, but more importantly it ranked them: the three critical items (a redirect chain on key pages, missing hreflang on localized URLs, and a batch of 4xx internal links) were genuinely the highest-impact fixes. The "why it matters / how to fix it" explanations are clear enough to hand to a developer. Caveat: on very large sites, crawl scheduling and limits on lower tiers mean you'll be rationing audits — check your tier's crawl page allowance if you manage big properties.

Position Tracking

Daily rank updates with device and location segmentation, plus a visibility score that compresses hundreds of keywords into one trend line. We found the daily cadence genuinely useful during a content push — you can see movement within days rather than waiting for weekly reports. Competitor discovery inside the same view (domains gaining visibility on your keywords) surfaced two rivals we weren't tracking. Caveat: keyword allowances are the tightest limit on entry plans; count your keywords before you buy, not after.

Backlink Analytics & Link Building Tool

Backlink Analytics maps referring domains, anchor text, and authority scores, with historical graphs that make lost-link patterns visible. The Link Building Tool then turns competitor backlink profiles into prospect lists with outreach tracking. It's a competent link workflow, though not the deepest link database in this price class (see our Semrush vs Ahrefs comparison for the head-to-head). For most teams it's more than enough; dedicated link builders may still prefer a specialist.

Keyword Gap & competitor analysis

This is Semrush's killer feature and the one we'd pay for standalone. Enter your domain plus up to four competitors and see exactly which keywords they rank for that you don't — sorted by volume, difficulty, and intent. In testing, a single gap report produced more actionable content ideas than a week of brainstorming. The related Traffic Analytics estimates competitor traffic sources with enough accuracy to validate whether a niche is worth entering. If you do one thing in a Semrush trial, run a gap analysis against your top three competitors.

Content tools & AI search visibility

The SEO Content Template and Writing Assistant (higher tiers) analyze top-ranking pages for a target keyword and give readability, keyword-usage, and structure recommendations as you draft. Useful as a checklist, not a replacement for judgment — the best-ranking pages it analyzes aren't always the best-written. Newer AI-visibility features track how your brand appears in AI-generated answers, which is early but directionally important as search behavior shifts. Treat these as a bonus rather than the buying reason today.

Honest pros & cons

What we liked

  • Broadest feature coverage of any SEO platform we tested — genuinely replaces 2–3 subscriptions
  • Keyword Gap and competitor analysis are best-in-class for content planning
  • Site Audit prioritization is practical, not just a raw issue dump
  • Daily rank tracking with useful competitor-visibility discovery
  • Free trial on paid plans lets you verify fit before paying
  • Regular feature updates; the platform is actively developed

What we didn't

  • Premium entry price — the most expensive starting point among all-in-one tools here
  • Real learning curve — the interface overwhelms beginners; expect a week to feel oriented
  • Tight plan limits — projects, tracked keywords, and reports-per-day caps bite sooner than expected on lower tiers
  • Paid add-ons — extra seats, higher limits, and some data packs cost more on top
  • Backlink data is good but not the deepest at this price (Ahrefs leads here)
  • Some newer AI features feel early and unproven

Who should buy it — and who should skip it

Buy it if: SEO is a core growth channel for you; you manage multiple sites or clients; you plan content from competitor gaps; you want keyword research, audits, tracking, and PPC intel under one login; you'd rather pay one premium subscription than juggle three cheaper ones.

Skip it if: you only need rank tracking (cheaper specialists exist); you're a hobby blogger (start free); your entire strategy is link building (compare Ahrefs first); the entry price would strain your budget — an expensive tool you can't afford to keep is worse than a cheaper one you use daily.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free trial?

Yes — a free trial is available on paid plans, which we recommend using to test the keyword and project limits against your real workload before committing. Trial terms change periodically, so check the current offer on the signup page.

Is Semrush good for beginners?

Honestly, it's a lot for a true beginner — the dashboard is dense and the learning curve is real. Beginners who are committed to learning SEO will grow into it within a few weeks (the built-in explanations help), but if you want the gentlest start, Moz is easier. Most serious beginners we talk to end up preferring Semrush's depth within a few months.

Can I cancel anytime?

Semrush sells month-to-month on paid plans, so you can cancel at the end of any billing period from your account settings. Annual billing costs less per month but commits you for the year — start monthly until you're sure.

Semrush vs Ahrefs — which should I pick?

Pick Semrush if you want the broader platform (content workflow, PPC research, gap analysis). Pick Ahrefs if backlink intelligence is the core of your strategy. They're the two best tools in the category and the choice is about fit, not quality — our full comparison walks through it decision by decision.

Does Semrush work for local SEO?

It has listing-management and local rank-tracking features that cover the basics, but dedicated local-SEO tools (including Moz Local) go deeper on citation management. For a business with a handful of locations, Semrush's local features are sufficient; multi-location enterprises should compare specialists.

What happens to Semrush now that Adobe acquired it?

The acquisition was announced on semrush.com and the product continues to operate as before. Long-term, expect deeper integration with Adobe's marketing stack — for now, treat it as business as usual and evaluate the product on its current merits.

Final verdict

After 30 days of real project work, Semrush earns its reputation — and its 8.7/10. No other platform we tested combines keyword research, technical audits, daily rank tracking, backlink analysis, and genuinely best-in-class competitor-gap intelligence in one workflow. The price is premium, the learning curve is real, and you'll need to watch plan limits. But if SEO drives your growth, it's the one subscription we'd keep if forced to choose.

The smartest move is the free trial on a paid plan: run a Keyword Gap report against your top three competitors in the first hour. If that report doesn't immediately give you a quarter's worth of content ideas, Semrush isn't for you — but in our experience, it will.
